Brush textures

Found a DA page with some good seamless textures. Converted them into brush textures for SAI2. All but the string brush come from Strapaca on Deviantart.

A day at the park

Tried something a little different. I laid out a grid and blocked in the major values without drawing anything with lines. It's working out well so far.

Hypothetical commissions

Scenario: Your favorite artist is offering to draw you anything you want. What will you request? Something that fits what they’re known for, but also something you’ve always wanted to see. It’s a fun thought exercise.

Pair artists with the specific ideas you would want them to draw. Plus, you can then draw those ideas using their art as an influence. Or straight up pretend they drew it- let’s be honest, that would be way more fun. Essentially, this is an exercise in borrowing and incorporating other artists’ styles.

How much time would you dedicate to writing about each artist? Really pretend it’s happening; get serious! Also, when picking an idea for the artist to draw, explain why they were assigned that idea. Why would they be a good fit for the idea?

Example: Carnelian

I would ask them to draw my OCs having a Venice wedding. - The idea reminds me of looking at professional anime art on the internet when I was in middle school. I was so amazed at what they could do. The idea also seems like something you'd see in an early 2000s bishoujo VN.

Starting up multiple projects

Over the weekend I started up multiple projects. Some were spurred by a single image that inspired me, while others are specific ideas I want to carry out. Usually when I think of something I want to do, I think “I’ll get to it eventually” and then never do. But ever since I started a 10 minute timer, I’ve felt like I can visit a lot more ideas now.

The problem is, do I have to finish everything I start? Should I come up with parameters? One of my favorite mantras is that not everything needs to be a masterpiece. So how will I decide what to continue working on, and what will I call done? The idea is that I can pick up wherever I stopped.

Maybe I’ll give “active” ideas a week to work on it. If I haven’t touched the project in 7 days, I will end it there, and I can always revisit it in the future. If not, I’ll keep working on it until I’m happy.

Maybe I’ll make a list. I could label projects with their status, if I intend to continue, and if so, how much further. I need to visit as many ideas as possible before it is too late.

Photo edit: reduced colors

I'm experimenting with color reduction to make the pictures easier to copy from when I do my studies. This was limited to 6-10 colors- but with dithering, it maintains most of its detail. My favorite thing about this is that objects in the light have more definition, while areas with less exposure to light tend to smear together.

Thumbnail studies

Did these a few weeks ago. I really want to do some large scale scenery paintings.

Walter WIP

Easing back into character art. It's my funky boi Walter.

Redhead

Decided to keep going on this one.

Before the prom

Our prom party posing together. It's such a distant memory now I can't even remember who was there unless I look at the photos. If I hadn't seen the photos would I remember everyone who was there?

Redhead

I haven't yet decided if I want to keep working on this- I really like the composition of the source photo.

Prom: La Goulue

A small value study. I was trying to go for something like that famous Moulin Rouge poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Honey Bea progress

After months of inactivity I have finally made good progress on Honey Bea. I painted her all in one sitting. I painted all of the background months ago, probably not even this year.

July check-in

My June was fairly productive. Haven't done many "completed" artworks but I have been doing lots of little value studies. I've decided to start up a blog. I'm building up an archive of all my favorite artworks throughout the years along with my value studies and other smaller artworks. I'm also posting my writing projects there as well. I fully intend to update this blog on a regular basis. There is a lot of art and writing on the blog that will never be posted to Deviantart or other sites I use, so please check it out!

Really depressed about current events. It's hard to stay positive and I'm trying to find ways I can help. As is common knowledge at this point, the Supreme Court just killed Roe v Wade, and also made some other terrible rulings while they're on a roll. We knew this was coming but it's still deeply disturbing and upsetting. It's easy to feel hopeless but always look for the helpers! I attended an activism event the other day and it made me hopeful seeing so many other people who care. If you want to help, here's a great list of resources. In the meantime, I am brainstorming other ways I can help- I was thinking of designing stickers or buttons to sell and donate the proceeds.

Trying to do more fun stuff this summer. I went to a sketching event at the museum and am hoping to make that a regular thing. Might get into selling my art at cons again too maybe.

Hope June treated you well, and have a safe and healthy July.
